Founded in 1986 near Hamburg (Hetlingen, Schleswig-Holstein) by Dr. Wolf Schnuchel, a chemist by training who set up the frame-making operation for his optician father-in-law between finishing his doctorate and its defense. He self-taught CAD/CNC milling and sourced early equipment at Hannover Messe; his wife, a photographer, devised an early method for digitizing frame contours. The brand is known for hand-finished European acetate in 600+ color combinations, not horn or wood.
